The Sony Open is the second event on the Hawaiian leg of the PGA Tour. With over a hundred golfers taking part, including rookies who?ve qualified from last month?s Q-School Finals, it?s far less competitive than the Tournament of Champions that precedes it, and punters should stick to those towards the top of the antepost lists.

The course at the Waialae Country Club, Oahu, is short by modern standards. The keys to taming it are driving accuracy and the ability to keep the ball low through the unpredictable Pacific gales. The winds tend to be strongest in the afternoon, so it could be worth waiting to see what time your selection is teeing off before parting with your cash. And with the large greens, you should focus on reliable putters.

Americans Dustin Johnson and Keegan Bradley are leading the way at the top of the antepost lists. Johnson in particular will be popular at 9/1 after his victory in the Tournament of Champions this week, but with its emphasis on driving accuracy over distance, Waialae isn?t his kind of course. The same goes for Bradley who could struggle when it comes to flighting the ball into the strong Oahu winds.

If you?re looking for a leading American contender, Webb Simpson and Zach Johnson are much better prospects. Simpson finished down the field at the Tournament of Champions, but Waialae is much more to his liking and he?s worth keeping on side at 18/1. Johnson won this event in 2009 and his accuracy off the tee, combined with his dependable putting make him an attractive betting option at 22/1.

Swede Carl Pettersson is also of interest. He had a pretty good 2012, picking up a Tour win in April, cracking the top three of the PGA Championship and finishing the season with in solid form. He?s adept at playing into the wind and has a good recent record in Oahu, where he managed fifth in 2010 and a tied second last year. He?s definitely worth keeping on side at 18/1.

And based on his tournament record, you?d also be foolish to overlook Charles Howell III. On the face of it, this isn?t really his kind of course, given the premium placed on driving accuracy, but when a golfer has a good record in a particular tournament, punters have to take note and his five top five finishes in this event cannot be overlooked. At 20/1 he?s a solid each way proposition.

Mark Wilson is another player who might struggle to compete when the emphasis is on distance, but whose driving accuracy and ability to find the greens in regulation makes him a solid contender at Waialae. He won this event in 2011 and his record suggests he?s a strong early season performer, with three of his five tournament wins coming in the first two months of the year. He can be backed at 45/1.
