Peaches Geldof shows off wedding ring

Peaches Geldof has shown off her engagement ring, wedding band and the band she received as a Christmas gift from husband Tom Cohen on Instagram.

Peaches Geldof has been showing off her impressive collection of rings.

The socialite - who is married to musician Tom Cohen - posted a picture on Instagram of the shiny diamond ring he gave to her at Christmas as well as her wedding band and engagement ring.

Accompanying the image. she wrote on Twitter: ''My amazing engagement ring with my wedding band and the new Tiffany gold and platinum band Tom gave me as my Christmas pressie from him (it matches his wedding band) (sic).''

Peaches and Tom married in September last year at St Mary Magdalene and St Lawrence Church in Davington, Kent, South East England.

The church holds special significance for Peaches, 23, as it was where her mother and her father, Bob Geldof, had their wedding blessed after earlier marrying in Las Vegas in 1986. It is also where Paula's funeral was held after she died of a drug overdose in 2000, but she said she could feel her at the wedding.

She said: ''I feel her presence all the time but especially today.

''Mum loved family celebrations and she would adore Tom and the fact that we've married here.

''I know that she is watching over me and feeling so happy for us.''

Peaches is currently expecting her second child with Tom, which will be a brother or sister to nine month old Astala.

Backyard chicken bans causing a stir in Southern California cities

Urban farmer John Lyons shows a few of the daily eggs he receives from his chickens in his Winnetka permaculture garden. (SGVN/Staff Photo by Sarah Reingewirtz)

Gallery: Urban farmer John Lyons raises chickens in his permaculture garden

Urbanites searching for cruelty-free eggs and farm-fresh produce are hatching plans to raise chickens and grow vegetables in their own backyards, redefining "local" food even beyond the neighborhood farmers market.

"Once you've eaten an egg that has come from a chicken in your backyard, you kind of turn your nose up at even the organic eggs in the store," said John Lyons, who owns the garden and chicken coop design company The Woven Garden.

But as the "urban homestead" movement continues to take flight in the Los Angeles region, many residents are clucking about some cities' bans on the egg-laying animals, which some see only as noisy neighbors.

When done right, backyard chickens can have many benefits, said Mike Scott of Eagle Rock, who builds chicken coops and vegetable gardens with his company Eagle Rock Backyard Farms. They can provide manure for the garden, eat household food waste, produce fresh eggs every morning and can even be lovable family pets.

"It's definitely a lifestyle, it's not just having another pet. You can have a dog and a dog gives you love back, but the chickens actually give you something for treating them really well, and that's the egg," Scott said. "You can't beat fresh eggs."

Chickens are already permitted in many cities, including Los Angeles, Pasadena, South Pasadena, Monterey Park, Glendora, Chino and Rancho Cucamonga, although many restrict the number of chickens per household and most ban roosters.

But San Dimas, Ontario, Montebello, San Gabriel and Whittier are among the cities that ban chickens in residential areas, and many who live in those cities are asking their city councils to lay off.

Last week, the San Marino City Council lifted its ban on backyard chickens at the request of some residents, though the city restricts the number of chickens per household and bans roosters.

San Gabriel is also looking to change its laws. The City Council last month granted resident Vito Clarizio a conditional permit to keep the eight chickens he's housed in his backyard for eight years, and directed staff to develop a new code that would allow backyard chickens with certain regulations.

Long Beach also has been considering loosening regulations on urban agriculture. A City Council committee considered the issue in June, and city staff are continuing to study how new proposed laws could be implemented.

The seemingly eccentric rule, a relic of Long Beach's

20th century urbanization, was part of a pack of changes to the municipal code debated by the City Council's Environmental Committee recently.

The proposed law would allow up to four hens with no restriction, five to 10 chickens at least 25 feet away from a neighboring residence and 11 to 20 of the birds at least 50 feet away from homes.

Currently, up to 20 hens can be kept on a property if they are at least 50 feet away from single and two-family residences and 100 feet from homes of three families or more.

Lyons, who owns 20 chickens at his San Fernando Valley home, said city chicken bans are likely based on antiquated ordinances, and any city that has them should reconsider.

"The chicken ban makes absolutely no sense," Lyons said. "Chickens are very quiet creatures, I don't understand what the restriction is about."

And the growing voice of urban chicken owners may prompt many cities to, like San Marino and San Gabriel, take a second look at their municipal codes.

Jordanne Dervaes, of Urban Homestead in Pasadena, has made a business raising crops and chickens at her family home and helping others do the same. She said when she first started keeping chickens 10 years ago, it was hard to find any information on how to raise them in an urban environment.

"That was breaking new ground," Dervaes said. "It was very scary for me at the time."

Now, owning a chicken coop has become a way for people to eat healthy, natural food and know where it is coming from.

Dervaes said she's happy that urban farming has become more popular, but also is concerned that some chicken owners might not know what they're getting into.

It can be especially hard, she said, because many urban vets and humane societies won't provide chicken health services.

"Now it is a trend and as with every trend people don't adhere to basic things you need to do to take care of an animal," Dervaes said. "I've seen the good and the bad. It's good when people do it right, but if you don't do it right it could backlash for the rest of us who are doing it right."

Though there might not be a chicken vet in Los Angeles cities, websites like backyardchickens.com and urbanchickens.org, and groups like Los Angeles Urban Chicken Enthusiasts, can provide support for the urban farming community.

Rob Ludlow, owner of backyardchickens.com, said his site has more than 125,000 active members nationally, up from 50 when the site first started in 2007.

"There is a growing awareness of how fun and easy it is to raise backyard chickens," Ludlow said via email. "People are quickly realizing that chickens are a multi-purpose pet."

Ludlow, of Pleasant Hill-based Ludlow Concepts Inc., also co-authored "Raising Chickens for Dummies" and "Building Chicken Coops for Dummies."

Scott, who quit his corporate job two years ago to start his backyard farm business, said he has seen a similar boom in business since he started his company. He has built chicken coops, "edible gardens" and bee hives for residents throughout the region and most recently constructed one for the Los Angeles County Arboretum.

"It's basically sustainable living, and chicken coops are a big part of that," he said. "You're basically creating a mini ecosystem."

Ultimately, he said it's not just the environmental or health benefits that make owning chickens so great, it's the atmosphere and the relationship he has with his chickens that make him glad he chose the lifestyle.

"One of my favorite things to do is sit outside with a glass of wine and watch the chickens peck and look for bugs," Scott said. "It's really relaxing."

Rosecrance, SwedishAmerican form mental health partnership ...

Rosecrance Health Network President and CEO Philip W. Eaton (left) and Dr. Bill Gorski, President and CEO of SwedishAmerican Health System, announce the partnership involving mental health care Wednesday, Jan. 30, at SwedishAmerican.

Rosecrance Health Network President and CEO Philip W. Eaton (left) and Dr. Bill Gorski, President and CEO of SwedishAmerican Health System, announce the partnership involving mental health care Wednesday, Jan. 30, at SwedishAmerican.

ROCKFORD ? Rosecrance Health Network and SwedishAmerican Health System have announced a new partnership to improve the continuum of mental ?health care services in northern Illinois. The partnership involves improvements in the delivery of both inpatient psychiatric care and outpatient behavioral health services.

Under an agreement approved by both organizations? boards of directors, Rosecrance will manage SwedishAmerican Hospital?s mental health unit. In this new model, SwedishAmerican continues its long-standing focus on inpatient psychiatric services. Nurses providing direct patient care will continue to be employed by the hospital, while the unit?s psychiatrists and therapists will become Rosecrance employees. Management of the unit will be provided by a director who is employed by Rosecrance, but reports to SwedishAmerican?s vice president of nursing.

In addition, Rosecrance has purchased SwedishAmerican?s outpatient behavioral health clinic, now located in Camelot Tower. On March 1, the clinic will close and its services will be integrated with existing Rosecrance operations through its affiliate, Aspen Counseling & Consulting.

Outpatient appointments will continue seamlessly; no interruption of service is expected. To accommodate the growth at Aspen, Rosecrance will announce a new location for outpatient services in the near future.

Patients will benefit from the SwedishAmerican-Rosecrance partnership through an expanded and more specialized base of providers, more comprehensive coverage for SwedishAmerican Hospital?s Emergency Department, additional case management alternatives and a tiered system that provides stronger alignment between mental health service options and patients? specific needs.

?Our partnership with Rosecrance will help us to more effectively bridge gaps in the current mental health care system, and ensure that patients receive the best possible care in the most appropriate setting, and in a timely fashion,? said SwedishAmerican President and CEO Dr. Bill Gorski. ?This is an excellent example of how two respected organizations are coming together to advance the continuity of mental health care in northern Illinois with creative solutions.?

Rosecrance President and CEO Philip W. Eaton said the organization?s Board of Directors believes the partnership with SwedishAmerican? will benefit the community and improve access to care by creating a more user-friendly system.

?The goal is to connect the dots between the acute care system and community-based services, creating a seamless transition between levels of care within the same network,? Eaton said. ?Every step of the way patients will be interacting with a unified team of clinical professionals who coordinate care under the same management system.?

SwedishAmerican is a not-for-profit, locally governed healthcare system, headquartered in Rockford, Illinois. The health system is comprised of two hospitals, 30 clinics, a home health care agency, and a foundation. Rosecrance, a private not-for-profit headquartered in Rockford, is one of the most comprehensive behavioral health networks in the state of Illinois. Rosecrance provides substance abuse and mental health treatment to more than 14,000 children, adolescents, adults and families each year. Rosecrance has facilities in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, along with six offices in Chicagoland.

Remarks from Philip W. Eaton, President and CEO of Rosecrance Health Network, made at the Jan. 30 announcement at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford:

I am delighted to be here today for this announcement, which I sincerely believe is a significant step forward for our community in terms of mental health services.

The Rosecrance Health Network Board of Directors is excited to enter into this partnership with SwedishAmerican Health System. We believe it will improve access to care and create a more user-friendly system for patients.

Dr. Bill Gorski and I, along with our respective administrative teams, have spent many hours talking about the goals and details of this partnership. At every step of the way, the focus stayed on improving the continuity of care to people who come to us with behavioral health needs. We believe this agreement does just that. This partnership allows Rosecrance and SwedishAmerican to continue working side by side, even as each of us focuses on our strengths.

The goal is to connect the dots between the acute care system and community-based services, creating a seamless transition between levels of care within the same network.

As for the big picture, health care is changing in?the United States ? both in how it will be delivered and in how we engage patients. Rosecrance is working with primary healthcare providers to address behavioral health needs among patients. We already are delivering this kind of integrated care at several locations through a partnership with Crusader Community Health. And we are exploring possibilities with other healthcare providers for how integration and collaboration may improve overall patient care.

We are thrilled to move forward with SwedishAmerican through this partnership to integrate behavioral health and primary health services, improve access for patients and provide a better continuum of care.

    Thank you.

Resident NM Guitar God, Ryan McGarvey has teamed with the innovative, life-enriching organization StringsforaCURE?, saying:

?I?m so incredibly honored to work with this organization, and to help for such a worthy cause. Please take a look at the great pieces of jewelry that they were able to make from my guitar strings. All proceeds go to help those with breast cancer.?

Elisa Guida, a two-time breast cancer survivor and jewelry designer, transforms guitar strings into one-of-a-kind bracelets, earrings, pendants and rings. Net proceeds are used to fund the foundation?s efforts to educate, comfort and support cancer patients. The foundation focuses primarily on helping those with breast cancer.

The StringsforaCURE? Foundation helps women and men diagnosed with cancer, primarily breast. Our mission is to provide education, comfort and support to cancer patients, focusing on the breast cancer patient. We help the patient directly by providing gas, grocery or pharmacy gift cards. We also provide educational materials, comfort baskets and medical grants. We want to ease the burden during their cancer journey. We raise awareness on how important nutrition and wellness plays a part in the recovery of the cancer patient.

National and international musicians donate their used guitar strings to StringsforaCURE?, and I transform them into one-of-a-kind bracelets, earrings, pendants and rings. We also raise funds through our online Virtual Quilt, our Pennies2Patients Program and Pickin? On Cancer fundraiser and also through private donations.

My dream is to recruit many nationally known musicians ? including Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow, Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen, among many others ? to donate their strings to the foundation. We have received strings from several famous musicians, such as Jon Bon Jovi, Melissa Etheridge, Paul Rodgers, Joe Bonamassa to mention a few. -Elisa Guida, Executive Director

The StringsforaCURE foundation is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization, and a Green Foundation. Their jewelry is made in the U.S.A. with net proceeds used to fund the foundation?s efforts to educate, comfort and support cancer patients.

Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade Review - Nintendo Life

    Obstacle to fun, maybe

If you were to poll gamers at large and ask them what they felt were the worst things about the Wii, chances are you'd hear "waggle" and "bad minigame collections" pretty frequently. In fact they often went hand in hand, and Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade is trying its hardest to make sure both of things carry over into the Wii U generation. We can only hope that they don't.

Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade ? it just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? ? is, as you might guess, a collection of short games that you can play with up to three friends. You might also guess that the games would revolve around an "obstacle" theme, but you'd be wrong; many of them are standard rounds of target practice, hide and seek, or, erm, picking the balloon with the number two on it after the game tells you to pick the balloon with the number two on it. That last one's not much of a game really, but there you go.

The collection is given a sort of theme park approach, with the games broken up into smaller, unlockable areas. Again, you'd expect the space area to contain space-themed games and the Western area to host games with a cowboy flair but by and large everything is just thrown at the wall with no regard for where it lands, and there's no telling what you'll encounter where. Fortunately, we guess, whatever you encounter will be reliably awful, so there's that to look forward to.

The games are hosted by a dead-eyed teddy bear with a stare so cold and creepy that we were constantly on edge for that inevitable moment when he'd pull out a knife. Half of his face is frozen in a bizarre semblance of what we can only assume is the developer's attempt at "'tude", while the other half just passively smiles. This, combined with the fact that his lips don't move when he talks, makes it seem like we've walked in on the bear in the middle of a massive coronary that's doomed to go untreated.

The entire package feels like a holdover from the previous generation; none of the graphics come anywhere near the capabilities of Nintendo's newest console, and the Wii U GamePad barely factors in at all, with each of the games requiring instead a Wii Remote and, often, Nunchuk. This means Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade plays identically to every other poorly-responsive, uninteresting, lazily slapped together mini-game collection you've been doing your best to avoid since 2006.

Every game supports four players; if there are fewer human players than that, the CPU will fill the void. Human players can enter any name for themselves that they like, but oddly the game also requires you to choose a separate name for the bear to call you by. This is because the developers only gave the bear a limited bank of audio files from which to draw, so you may tell the game that your name is William, but then you'll have to choose whether it calls you Chano or Shamus or Julio instead. It's bizarre to say the least.

In each game you'll compete against the other three for points. This nearly always involves waggling as quickly as possible, but sometimes it can rely on maneuvering crosshairs around the screen instead. No game is any more complicated than that, and it often feels as though the developer went out of its way to assign the most frustrating control schemes possible. Some games, for instance, are races that see you hopping from platform to platform. Despite the fact that each player has a perfectly good D-Pad and A button to use, Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade requires you to thrust the Wii Remote in the direction you wish to jump. Not that it cares where you actually thrust; it's a crapshoot whether or not the game will ever recognise your input. It's a needless and mandatory use of the least reliable control scheme possible, which is pretty much par for the course here.

The Wii U GamePad only comes into play during the bonus rounds. The rest of the time it features the glass-eyed bear glowing creepily at you and loudly narrating minor gameplay developments without moving his mouth. During the bonus rounds the winner of the previous game spins a roulette wheel, which determines what the bonus game will be. Here the GamePad is used differently than the Wii Remotes, but it's certainly no more fun, and it really does feel like a tacked on addition to what's essentially a low budget Wii cash-in.

The sound effects are beyond terrible, as the four players on-screen avatars laugh and hoot and holler over each other throughout every event, turning everything into a clamorous, cluttered aural monstrosity. The bear barks meaningless platitudes about every minor thing that happens ? from a player grabbing a coin to a player not grabbing a coin ? and while you're not likely to come away from this game feeling fulfilled you're more or less guaranteed a headache.

We'd like to close on a positive note of some kind, but we genuinely can't. This is an absolutely terrible game, and you don't want it. Trust us.

As clunky and poorly considered as its title, Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade is awful. Relying entirely on the shallow and repetitive waggle that should have died along with Wii, there's absolutely no reason to recommend this obnoxious, screaming, clattering monstrosity at all. It's mindless entertainment at its worst, but, on the bright side, it might be the perfect way to cure your childrens' burgeoning video game addiction.

Court says EPA overestimates biofuels production

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A federal appeals court has ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency is overestimating the amount of fuel that can be produced from grasses, wood and other nonfood plants in an effort to promote a fledgling biofuels industry.

At issue is a 2007 renewable fuels law that requires a certain amount of those types of fuels, called cellulosic biofuels, to be mixed in with gasoline each year. Despite annual EPA projections that the industry would produce small amounts of the biofuels, none of that production materialized.

There have been high hopes in Washington that the cellulosic industry would take off as farmers, food manufacturers and others blamed the skyrocketing production of corn ethanol fuel for higher food prices. Those groups said the diversion of corn crops for fuel production raised prices for animal feed and eventually for consumers at the grocery store. Lawmakers hoped that nonfood sources like switchgrass or corn husks could be used instead, though the industry hadn't yet gotten off the ground.

The 2007 law mandated that billions of gallons of annual production of corn ethanol be mixed with gasoline, eventually transitioning those annual requirements to include more of the nonfood, cellulosic materials to produce the biofuels. As criticism of ethanol has increased, lawmakers and even Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have talked of the cellulosic materials as the future of biofuels.

But the cellulosic industry stalled in the bad economy and still hasn't produced much. According to final EPA estimates, no cellulosic fuel was produced in 2010 or 2011. Last year's estimates aren't yet available.

"What you have in our industry is a technology that is ready to go but has had a hard time punching through commercially because of a very challenging global financial climate," said Brooke Coleman of the Advanced Ethanol Council, which represents companies trying to produce cellulosic fuel. Coleman said there are better hopes for 2013 as several plants are coming online.

The court faulted the EPA for setting last year's projections at 8.7 million gallons even though the two previous years had shown no production, and also for writing in the rule that "our intention is to balance such uncertainty with the objective of promoting growth in the industry."

Judge Stephen Williams on Friday threw out the too-high EPA estimates in response to a challenge filed by the American Petroleum Institute, which represents the oil industry.

Williams, an appointee of President Ronald Reagan, said the law was not intended to allow the EPA "let its aspirations for a self-fulfilling prophecy divert it from a neutral methodology."

The court rejected the oil industry's arguments that the EPA also should have lowered the total production requirement for renewable fuels once the cellulosic goals were not met, saying the EPA had authority to decide to maintain those requirements.

An EPA spokeswoman would only say the agency will "determine next steps." The oil industry praised the decision.

"The courts have reined in a mandate for biofuels that don't exist," said Bob Greco of the American Petroleum Institute. "It's a voice of reason."
