NBC's Gregory: Why shouldn't Greenwald be charged?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? NBC "Meet the Press" host David Gregory got a rise out of Glenn Greenwald by asking the Guardian reporter why he shouldn't be charged with a crime for having "aided and abetted" former National Security Agency analyst Edward Snowden.

Greenwald replied Sunday that it was "pretty extraordinary" that someone who calls himself a journalist would ask whether other journalists should be charged with felonies.

Gregory said that the question of who is a journalist may be "up to a debate" with regard to Greenwald. The host added that he was asking a question, not taking a position.

Greenwald broke the story of Snowden's disclosure of U.S. government surveillance programs. Snowden was believed to have landed in Russia on Sunday ? possibly as a stopover before traveling to South America.

YouTube for iOS update with support for video suggestion overlays

YouTube for iOS has been updated with support for overlays with suggestions for what to watch next. These banners come up from the bottom of the video that you are currently watching, suggesting a video for you to watch after your current video is done. Suggestions can be dismissed with a tap of the 'x' button on the right side of the banner. It does not happen automatically, and content providers will need to implement the feature for the banners to appear on their videos.

This update also contains closed captions for live videos along with the usual stability improvements and bug fixes.

San Gabriel Valley Tea Cafes Are Tasty And Authentic (PHOTOS)

This story comes courtesy of Los Angeles Magazine

By Roger Park

The long line outside Half & Half Tea Express in Monterey Park says it all. Angelenos are thirsty for honey boba, milk tapioca, and flavored iced teas of all kinds.

In recent years, tea cafes have grown in popularity throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Though the clientele is predominantly young Asian Americans, Angelenos of all walks of life are discovering the seemingly infinite variations on flavored and textured tea.

Many tea cafes, such as Tea Station in San Gabriel, serve simple meals in addition to their beverage offerings. You'll find tea-flavored noodles, Taiwanese popcorn chicken, quick rice dishes, and desserts like mango ice. These tea cafes often act as social hubs for high schoolers looking for a place to study with a side of boba.

Originally created in Taiwan in the 1980s, boba is a tea-based drink that often contains fruit or milk in addition to signature "boba" balls, which are made from tapioca. Ice-blended versions are often mixed with flavored syrups and have a slushy texture. Wide straws enable imbibers to access the chewy boba. Fans love their firm, gelatinous consistency and sweet finish.

?Tea is growing in popularity because people see the health benefits,? said Jimmy Huang, 54, owner of Tea Station. Huang opened his first tea caf? in 1996 and now says there are over 50 Tea Stations within North America.

?Originally these tea cafes opened in Asian neighborhoods because people in the neighborhood were familiar with boba and are already tea drinkers. But now, the beverage is going mass market. Plus, more people now want to drink tea instead of coffee,? added Huang.

Now that we're in the midst of a hot summer, you might want to check out one of these air-conditioned tea cafes or stop in to get an iced drink while on the go. At Tea Station, the mango strawberry teazer, pearl iced green tea, and black sugar milk boba tea are all popular. At Ozero in Alhambra, the lemon green tea with kumquat has a nice balance of sour and honey-sweet. And with tea, it's all about striking the right balance.

How Messy Is Your Computer's Desktop?

We all aspire to a certain amount of digital desktop cleanliness, but I think rather few of us actually keep up on it. As the days go by, the clutter builds bit by bit, and it's just irritating enough to be unpleasant, but not a big enough deal to actually clean up.

Virus combination effective against deadly brain tumor

June 20, 2013 ? A combination of the myxoma virus and the immune suppressant rapamycin can kill glioblastoma multiforme, the most common and deadliest malignant brain tumor, according to Moffitt Cancer Center research. Peter A. Forsyth, M.D., of Moffitt's Neuro-Oncology Program, says the combination has been shown to infect and kill both brain cancer stem cells and differentiated compartments of glioblastoma multiforme.

The finding means that barriers to treating the disease, such as resistance to the drug temozolomide, may be overcome. The study, by Forsyth and colleagues in Canada, Texas and Florida, appeared in a recent issue of Neuro-Oncology.

"Although temozolomide improves survival for patients with glioblastoma multiforme, drug resistance is a significant obstacle," said Forsyth, the study lead author. "Oncolytic viruses that infect and break down cancer cells offer promising possibilities for overcoming resistance to targeted therapies."

The authors note that oncolytic viruses have the potential to provoke a multipronged attack on a tumor, with the potential to kill cancer cells directly through viral infection and possibly through inducing the immune system to attack the tumor. The multipronged approach might get around some of the classical resistance mechanisms that have plagued both targeted therapies and conventional chemotherapies.

Several oncolytic viruses, both alone or in combination with small molecule inhibitors, have been tested and show promise for malignant gliomas. However, most have not been effective in killing cancer cells. Two likely obstacles may be the patient's own anti-viral immune response and limited virus distribution.

"Based on our previous work with myxoma virus, we considered it to be an excellent oncolytic virus candidate against brain cancer stem cells," explained Forsyth.

The researchers found that brain cancer stem cells were susceptible to myxoma virus in the laboratory cultures (in vitro) and in animal models (in vivo), including in temozolomide-resistant cell lines.

"We also found that myxoma virus with rapamycin is a potentially useful combination. The idea that cancer cells can be killed by a harmless virus is an exciting prospect for therapy," Forsyth said.

The precise mechanism rapamycin uses to enhance infection in brain cancer stem cells is unknown, and the combination therapy does not result in cures. However, researchers are investigating other drugs that may improve the effectiveness of myxoma virus when used in combination, and they are evaluating the use of other strains of myxoma virus that might be more effective.

"Although our study adds myxoma virus to the list of oncolytic viruses capable of infecting and killing these cells, which strengthens its candidacy for clinical application, our model will need clinical application to determine its safety for patients," concluded the authors. "We expect that intracranial injections of myxoma virus will be safe based on our extensive preclinical work and the demonstrated safety of other oncolytic viruses in clinical trials."

This study was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (R01 AI080607, R21 CA149869, and R01 CA138541).

Researchers from the University of Florida, University of Calgary, University of Texas and Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre Research Laboratories contributed to this work and publication.

Some of Tony Soprano's memorable lines

NEW YORK (AP) ? Some memorable lines spoken by the late James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano in "The Sopranos":

?"You know my feelings: Every day is a gift. It's just, does it have to be a pair of socks?"

?"What kind of (expletive) human being am I, if my own mother wants me dead?"

?About his father: "The belt was his favorite childhood development tool."

?"Nothing beats popping up some Orville Redenbachers and listening to 'Men in Black.'"

?"Nowadays, everybody's gotta go to shrinks and counselors, and go on 'Sally Jessy Raphael' and talk about their problems. What happened to Gary Cooper? The strong, silent type."

?"I gotta be honest with you. I'm not getting any satisfaction from my work."

?"I'm like King Midas in reverse. Everything I touch turns to (expletive)."

?"You got any idea what my life would be worth if certain people found out I checked into a laughing academy?"

?"When you're married, you'll understand the importance of fresh produce."

?"It wasn't like it was friggin' Cobain. It was just a little suicidal gesture, that's all."

Weiner defends his reaction to voter who used anti-gay slur

Weiner says he condemned a voter who used a slur against Quinn (Mario Tama/Getty Images)

NEW YORK?Armed with laser pointer and several PowerPoint slides, former Rep. Anthony Weiner sought to distinguish himself Thursday as the only Democratic mayoral hopeful willing to embrace what he called the "big" and "bold" ideas with a speech calling for a dramatic transformation of the way New Yorkers receive their health care.

But all it took was an apparent throw-away comment on a street corner several weeks ago to overshadow Weiner's latest attempt to turn the page from being the candidate who was forced out of Congress in a sexting scandal.

Instead of talking about health care, Weiner was forced to respond to questions about a published report that suggested he failed to strongly condemn a voter who used a homophobic slur to describe his mayoral rival Christine Quinn.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that Weiner, at a recent campaign stop, spoke to an elderly voter who described Quinn, who is openly gay, as a ?dyke.?

Weiner, according to the paper, did not initially offer a reaction, asking the woman to sign a petition that would help him qualify for the city?s mayoral ballot. But the Post reported Weiner quickly shifted gears when he noticed the ?incredulous reaction of a reporter.?

?You really shouldn?t talk that way about people,? Weiner told the woman, according to the Post.

?Oh, I?m sorry,? the woman replied.

?It?s okay,? Weiner reportedly said. ?It?s not your fault.?

The story forced Weiner into damage control mode, telling reporters that the conversation with the woman occurred when he was standing in a "scrum of people." He insisted again and again he had condemned her comment and didn't recall any further discussion with the woman.

?When I heard the woman make that remark, I immediately admonished her not to say anything further,? Weiner told reporters, who surrounded him with tape recorders and cameras. ?I don?t have any memory of saying anything beyond that to the woman.?

He added, ?Let me make very clear that any utterance of any type of slur against any community I won?t tolerate.?

Weiner repeatedly said he has a ?long record? of supporting gay rights, even though he represented a ?fairly conservative district? in Congress and risked alienating his constituents.

?I feel very strongly about these issues, and I did admonish the woman and if there was something else that was said that was in any way interpreted as anything else, that was wrong. I admonished the woman and I believe she shouldn?t have said what she said,? Weiner declared, adding ?there should be no slurs like this of any kind? in the campaign.

While the Quinn campaign had no response, two openly gay state lawmakers released a statement criticizing Weiner?s initial response to the voter.

?We are appalled by the account in the Washington Post of Anthony Weiner?s unacceptable response to a prospective voter?s homophobic, misogynistic slur in reference to Christine Quinn,? Assemblywoman Deborah Glick and Sen. Brad Hoylman, both of whom have endorsed Quinn, said in a statement. ?Weiner?s response to this blatant display of homophobia is completely inappropriate and extremely alarming.?

The episode overshadowed the health care speech Weiner delivered before a Manhattan policy group Thursday in which he repeated his call for the creation of a ?single payer? health care system modeled after Medicare and managed and publicly financed by the city. He said his proposal, similar to a plan he pushed while in Congress, would save money by ?streamlining? the administration of the city?s health care and ultimately reducing overall coverage costs for all New Yorkers.

?New York is the ideal laboratory for a single-payer health care system,? Weiner said, pointing to the diversity of the population.

But Weiner offered only vague points about the mechanics of how he would begin to implement such a plan?especially in a political environment where President Barack Obama?s health care plan, which does not go nearly as far, is considered controversial.

He told Yahoo News he did not believe he would have to sign a law implementing the health care changes, but walked away before offering other details, like whether he would require approval from the City Council or would merely seek an executive order.

One element of Weiner?s plan that could generate some opposition from powerful labor unions representing city employees is a plan to ask municipal workers to pay more for their insurance. Under his proposal, current and retired city workers would pay 10 percent of their health care premiums, while smokers would pay 25 percent.

?Everybody has to have some skin in the game (for it to work),? Weiner said.
