AP, local news networks eye online video networks : Media-Saver

It's only in a very early stage, but it appears that newspaper video networks could emerge as the way for newspapers to serve and/or recapture readers in local markets.

Big name companies moving into the space of providing video resources like the Associated Press and Gannett are being joined by smaller players like Rapid City, S.D.-based iNK Barrel Video Networks, which has contracted over 150 newspapers in 20 states for Internet videos of local high school sports, said a story in NetNewsCheck.

?We see ourselves more like a cable network,? Stewart Huntington, iNK Barrel's CEO, said in the story. The company is pushing local sports because ?[t]hat's where we find the most accessible revenue and successful business out of the gate for broadcasters.?

The move into local video is, all things considered, relatively inexpensive. Newspapers can start with about $2,500 worth of equipment?camera, laptop, tripod, connecting ports and wireless microphone?and go from there, Huntington said. The shooting can be done using either volunteers from the schools or low-cost freelancers eager to get paid for a couple hours of work.

On a bigger scale, the AP launched a Video Hub in September, aiming it at newspapers that want to create their own videos and need help from outside sources with raw content. The model mirrors AP's print process, where newspapers sometimes localize national and international content provided by the news service.

?What we wanted to do was find a way to get all of this AP video, of which we have lots, into one place where it would be easy for newspapers to use,? said Sue Brooks, director of video transformation at AP. ?It is not necessarily designed to be plug-and-play. It's designed for somebody at the customer end to do something with it?to put their own branding or narration on it.?

Tellingly, AP is targeting the service at newspapers, not broadcasters. It's still evolving the revenue model.

For now, as with everything in a very fluid space, nothing is set in stone.

?We want the Video Hub to be the first port of call for anybody wanting to use, buy or sell professional news video,? Brooks said. ?We know that if we can be that first port of call that would build a community of users.?

US declines to label China a currency manipulator

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration declined Tuesday to label China a currency manipulator, noting that it has let the yuan rise nearly 10 percent in value against the dollar since June 2010.

The decision came in a twice-a-year Treasury report on whether any other nations are manipulating their currencies to gain trade advantages. Despite its decision, the administration said the yuan remains "significantly undervalued," and it urged China to make further progress.

U.S. manufacturers contend that China is manipulating its currency to gain a trade advantage. A weaker yuan makes Chinese goods cheaper for American consumers and U.S. goods more expensive in China.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney had vowed during the campaign to brand China a currency manipulator if he won the White House. Such a designation would risk retaliation that would hurt American exporters, the Obama administration has argued.

The Treasury is required to report its findings on currency manipulation to Congress semiannually. The last time the United States named any country a currency manipulator was in 1994, when the Clinton administration made that accusation against China.

Since then, both Democratic and Republican administrations have determined that they could make more progress in narrowing America's trade gap with China through negotiations rather than confrontation.

But during this year's presidential campaign, Romney argued that this approach had failed. He said he would label China a currency manipulator on his first day in office. Such a designation could eventually lead to higher tariffs on Chinese goods entering the United States. But such tariffs could also trigger a trade war with a country that is the fastest-growing market for U.S. exports.

The deadlines for the currency report to be issued are April 15 and Oct. 15 each year. But the Obama administration announced in October that it would delay the fall report until after meetings of finance ministers in early November. That decision also delayed the report until after the November election.

Former spokesmen for Romney had no immediate comment on the administration's decision. But Sen. Charles Schumer, a longtime critic of China's trade policies, criticized it.

"This report all but admits China's currency is being manipulated but stops short of saying so explicitly," Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement. "It's time for the Obama administration to rip off the Band-aid and force China to play by the same rules as all other nations."

Treasury said the yuan, also known as the renminbi, has risen in valued by 9.7 percent since June 2010 ? and by 12.6 percent when inflation is taken into account.

Still, Treasury said the yuan remains significantly undervalued. It vowed to keep pressing Beijing to let the currency rise further to "level the playing field for American workers and businesses and support a strong, sustainable and balanced global economy."

The U.S. trade deficit with China reached $29.1 billion in September. It is running 6.8 percent ahead of last year's record pace. It has long been the largest U.S. trade gap with any one country.

Coupon website RetailMeNot just launched a Facebook app that recommends deals and coupons based on users? Likes and interests.

The RetailMeNot site, which currently boasts more than 500,000 offers a year, can often seem overwhelming for consumers looking for deals. But the new Facebook can help make these offers more relevant to consumers, and thus more effective for the businesses that submit offers.

Users of the RetailMeNot app simply give it permission to see their Likes, and then they can also select a few of their favorite retailers in order to get an even more personalized feed of offers and coupons. Then, over time, the RetailMeNot app also takes into account the offers that users click.

The photo above shows the Facebook app, which includes a customized feed of coupons and offers. It details how much of a discount the user can receive, the expiration date, and more personalized information. Users can also save coupons and add favorite stores to their preferences.

Coupon codes can be submitted by any online retailer, and printable coupons that include scannable bar codes can be submitted by local stores. In addition, the site allows businesses to submit sales or shopping tips that just give consumers information about saving money.

To submit a coupon or sale, you need only create an account and then provide the name of the retailer, type of deal, and any other information necessary for shoppers to redeem the offer.

Offers are then reviewed by the site and often go live within a few hours. You can then track how many users have redeemed your coupon and how much they saved.

RetailMeNot was launched in 2006 and is owned by Whale Shark Media. RetailMeNot also offers a coupon app for iPhone, as well as a weekly email with a stream of recent deals.

It's time once again for that great American tradition that everyone coming back to work so highly anticipates - Cyber Monday. Fetuses yawn in the womb, according to new research

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? We know that unborn babies hiccup, swallow and stretch in the womb but new observational research concludes that they also yawn.

The 4D scans of 15 healthy fetuses, by Durham and Lancaster Universities, also suggest that yawning is a developmental process which could potentially give doctors another index of a fetus' health.

The study is published November 21 in the journal, PLOS ONE.

While some researchers have suggested that fetuses yawn, others have disagreed and claim it is simple mouth opening.

But the new research clearly distinguished 'yawning' from 'non-yawn mouth opening' based on the duration of mouth opening. The researchers did this by using the 4D video footage to closely examine all events where a mouth stretch occurred in the fetus.

Using their newly developed criteria, the research team found that over half of the mouth openings observed in the study were classed as yawns.

The study was carried out on eight female and seven male fetuses from 24 to 36 weeks gestation. The researchers found that yawning declined from 28 weeks and that there was no significant difference between boys and girls in yawning frequency.

Although the function and importance of yawning is still unknown, the study findings suggest that yawning could be linked to fetal development, and as such could provide a further medical indication of the health of the unborn baby.

Lead researcher, Dr Nadja Reissland, of Durham University's Department of Psychology, said: "The results of this study demonstrate that yawning can be observed in healthy fetuses and extends previous work on fetal yawning. Our longitudinal study shows that yawning declines with increasing fetal age.

"Unlike us, fetuses do not yawn contagiously, nor do they yawn because they are sleepy. Instead, the frequency of yawning in the womb may be linked to the maturing of the brain early in gestation.

"Given that the frequency of yawning in our sample of healthy fetuses declined from 28 weeks to 36 weeks gestation, it seems to suggest that yawning and simple mouth opening have this maturational function early in gestation."

She added that yawning could be related to central nervous system maturation but further research involving mother and fetus would be required to examine this theory.

Fortunately, keeping your gutters in shape is something you can do on your own. With proper upkeep and by addressing problems immediately, you can prevent expensive future repairs and at the same time add length to your gutters? service life. Here is a list of some of the most common gutter problems and how you can address them on your own.

Obstructed Gutters

Obstructed gutters is one of the most common problems home-owners encounter with their roof?s drainage system. This happen when leaves, twigs and other materials build-up inside your gutters and down spouts. If left unattended, both the gutters and down spouts become useless as they cannot properly channel water away from your home. Thus, excess water add weight to the system, making it sag or pull away from your home?s fascia.

To address this problem, clean your gutters and down spouts at least twice a year, especially if there are trees near your house. Remove muck by hand and use a spade to remove the remaining dirt. Once all the build-up are removed, flush your gutters with a garden hose to ensure that water is flowing properly. To prevent leaves and other materials from accumulating in your gutters, outfit them with gutter covers. There are numerous kinds of gutter covers available including clip-on grates, mesh screens and porous foams. You can purchase them from your local home improvement store and apply them yourself.

Leaks, Holes and Rotted Gutters

The joints that connect your gutters are susceptible to leaks and holes, which in turn can affect the integrity of the gutters themselves. You can easily address this issue by caulking the joints or seams using a gutter sealant. Larger holes, however, should be patched up to prevent further damage. You can easily purchase a patching kit at your local hardware or create ones from excess metal flashing.

If parts of your gutters have already corroded due to standing paddles of water, what you should do is to wash and dry the corroded areas to remove dirt. Sand the area until the metal is apparent, then cut a patch from aluminium, galvanized metal or copper flashing several inches longer than the corroded sections. If the rotting occurred in the corners, you may have to bend the patches accordingly so they will conform to the shape of the corners. Then, spread a thick layer of cement coating onto the damaged areas using a putty knife, then firmly press down the patches in place.

Sagging and Pulled Gutters

If some of your gutters are starting to sag or are pulling away from your house, it is likely that the hangers are already loose or have deteriorated. Check the hangers immediately and tighten them in place if they are loose. However, if they have already deteriorated, you need to change them with new ones to provide the right support for the entire weight of the gutters. You can purchase hangers and fasteners without necessarily spending a fortune and you can integrate them on your own to save on labor costs.

Gutters have Wrong Pitch

In order for your gutters to funnel excess water properly into the down spouts, they should have have at least a slope that is a quarter inch for every 10 feet. If your gutters is not pitched properly, water can eventually form pools in your gutters and roof, which can cause corrosion or rotting. To correct this, you need to either push the gutters up by bending the hangers or take a section of the gutters down then rehang them.

Down Spouts?Channeling?Excess Water too Close to the Foundation

Down spouts should extend several feet away from your house. If not, they will channel water directly to your basement. If your down spouts are integrated closely to the foundation, you can remedy this by applying gutter extensions at the end of the down spouts so that excess water will go beyond your home?s foundation.
